The hosts noted that Lord's classic account detailed many passenger descriptions of the strange grinding and clattering sounds as the Titanic struck the iceberg.
So one of the lookouts said it was a grinding sound on the bottom, another lookout a grating sound like a ship running up on gravel or crushing noise, and lots of the passengers said it was a sort of clattering, it was the sound of going over marbles... in Walter Lord's book of Night to Remember and indeed in the other book that we've been talking about a lot Richard Davenport Hines' book Titanic Lives, both writers have lots and lots of examples of the different ways in which people describe the sound.
