Thanks to everyone who supported Right Thing. Right now I just found out it spent another week on the New York Times Best Seller list, so thanks to everyone. My arms are exhausted from signing all the copies.

It's to have a Daily Stoic, I'm exhausted from mailing them all out. But it just means so much that everyone's supporting the book. And it's funny, I made this big video of like, actually three videos, which I'll link to them in the show notes because they're on the YouTube channel. But I basically, as I was writing the book, I was sort of documenting as it was happening. Like even at the very beginning when I was like, what the hell is this book? Like I have that footage. So you can really see the book go from conception to organizing the note cards, the first words on the page, all the drafts, covers, whatever.

But as I was going through the footage, I noticed there's one day, I don't know why I was filming it, I'd just been out of town, I got back and I'm taking a COVID test. And I was like, what is that about? So I watched the footage. And then I realized what had happened is I'd gone and done a live event for, this is still sort of smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. And I'd done a live event in Los Angeles with Jordan Harbinger, who I ran the first chunk of our in-person interview at the Painted Port Studios earlier in the week.

But anyways, I'd just done this, flown out to LA, got to stay in my favorite place, which is the Los Angeles Athletic Club, got to swim in, and then we went and we did it at some little club in LA. And it was awesome, it was great to see him. I hadn't seen him since the lockdowns and whatever. And then I get home and I get a text and he goes, man, I feel so terrible, but I just tested positive for COVID. He's like, I don't know if I got it.

Like the next day, I'm going to go shoot something. He's like, I don't know if I got it there. I felt fine. He was like beside himself. And I was like, it's okay, man. I'm an adult. I just appreciate you telling me because now I can handle myself.

"

I wrote what I think is my best book. Like, I became better for doing it. I worked really hard on it. I think it has a bunch of my best writing in it. I'm really proud of it.

And then you might have listened on the second part of the Max Joseph episode, there's me getting my call from my agent. So me writing a good book, me getting to put that book out in the world, people getting to read it. That's thing one, that's thing two.

I do want to say, I so appreciate everyone supporting the book. I appreciate you listening to this podcast. I try not to be motivated by those external things, but it does mean something to me.

It's not you either are it or you're not. It's not an end state that you arrive at. It is a process that you are participating in.

And so what I've loved about this series, I did a courage one first and the discipline one and then this one is that each one has allowed me for the period of time that I was writing it was a year. This one was two years was to live with these amazing people, sometimes awful people.

And what I really came to understand writing the book and what I've tried to apply in my life is that we think of justice as this sort of big abstract thing.

If you're a good person, you try to live with integrity. This inspires you.

One of the subjects in Right Thing Right Now, the new book, is Albert Schweitzer, a philosopher and doctor who dedicated his life to setting up and working in medical facilities in South Africa. When asked why he did this, he explained that in light of the horrors of colonialism from the then-only recent past, he didn't have a choice.

We are burdened with a great debt, he said. We are not free to confer or not confer these benefits on these people as we please. It is our duty, he said. Anything we give them is not benevolence but atonement. This is the foundation from which all deliberations about works of mercy must begin.

I think I tell it in, um, in the book I just sent you in the justice book, I tell a story about, uh, and they talk, both of them talk about in their memoirs, but at the, uh, when grant is sent to take Vicksburg, uh, he has the plan.

He says we're going to run the gunboats. We're going to come. He has this complicated plan and, and basically Sherman's like, it's a terrible idea. It won't work. It absolutely, it's going to end in disaster. We can't do it. And Grant's like, okay.

And Sherman goes back to his tent and he goes, I just, I don't think he understands me. I'm going to lay out my, my objections in writing so he can really understand.

And he sends grant this letter to grant gets the letter, takes it seriously, but decides it's the right thing to do.

And then of course, grant does take Vicksburg and it, it's the turning point of the war and it sends grand on his path to ultimately take over the army of Potomac.

And actually, I touch on this very key Stoic idea in Right Thing right now, and I get into that quote there, that idea that all that evil needs to prevail is for good men to do nothing, because the idea behind that quote is a little more complicated.

So I'm going to pull up--this is page 143, part two--and I tell the story of Joseph Kennedy, the father of future President John F. Kennedy, who was the ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1940. Germany rushed to rearm, portending not just war but the Holocaust, which was the logical, in fact, promised end of Hitler's vision. Famine, destruction, carnage, the signs were all there and so were the opportunities to prevent it. Instead, Kennedy, an isolationist, urged restraint. He made false equivalences and raised whataboutisms. He blamed the victims. He tried to meet with Hitler. He supported appeasement. He discouraged any potential American aid to Britain even as the bombs fell. It wasn't that bad, he said at first and then later, that it was helpless. Joseph P. Kennedy was not some secret Nazi, but like a lot of people then and now, he wanted a looming problem to not be his problem. He was looking for a way not to have to care, to not get involved, to not have to risk anything.

And that's what I talk a lot about in Right Thing Right Now. Good values, good character, good deeds. This stoic virtue of justice is an essential one. It's a difficult one to get right, but it's an essential one.

But the idea and I talk about Lincoln in the book is that although Lincoln was a brilliant philosopher and thinker, he was for most of his life just an ordinary lawyer and rural politician.
