First and Second Samuel Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching

I went through the entire book of judges and then, well, let's do Ruth. And then first Samuel and second Samuel.

Hired by the book of Second Samuel.

They're death fulfilled what God had told Saul would happen and it meant that David would no longer live in exile.

He would no longer be fearful of Saul.

He could return to Israel and begin his kingship to lead God's people.

But we'll learn today that Israel is now a divided nation with Saul's son Ishmael Sheth thrust onto the throne of Israel and David ruling in Judah.

No one would step up to his challenge. Nobody except David, inspired by the book of First Samuel.

The Lord who delivered me from the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.

The size of the enemy is unimportant when the Lord is on your side, and yes, the battle is the Lord's.

God will not be mocked, and he might only use David to show just how powerful he is to accomplish his purposes.

And it points to the ultimate good shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would one day slay the greatest giant of all, the giant of sin and death.

They will insist on a king despite God's promise to rule over them.

God would allow the people to put their hope in a king.

He is not a god that begs for relationship.

Now this is not written in first Samuel. This is not recorded in the Bible, but it must have been the case.

And that's one of the ways that David is establishing not only himself as a king but Israel as a kingdom, and that is massively important.

Remember under King Saul there was this loose confederation of these 12 types of Israel now David is bringing them together and united he's establishing a kingdom, and he's establishing a kingdom by basically defeating all the nations around them.

Now it's also really unique to notice that, I mentioned yesterday that while 2 Samuel and well you know Samuel the books of Samuel and the books of kings are kind of written, I don't want to say contemporaneously but a lot more a lot closer to the actual events whereas Chronicles is written after the fact it's written far into the future, after the Babylonian exile most likely by Ezra the scribe.

And so we see these lines crossing we see these paths as they unfold in our story and as we follow the story keep this in mind is that everything that's happening in the books called the Bible all that's happening is again not just arbitrary and it's not just kind of incidental but it is for our direction for our education and for vision.

Second Samuel 7 is one of the most important chapters in all of Scripture.
