The Rational Bible Deuteronomy

There is a whole list of curses...the book of Deuteronomy is like, you'll go into the land and there'll be people who will tempt you to participate in these sorts of cultures and you will not participate in these sorts of culture or ...

here's what the book of Deuteronomy had to say about it. Quote, a woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing, for anyone who does such is an abomination to the Lord your God.

Now remember that this is in direct disobedience to Deuteronomy chapter 17 verse 16 where it said about the king of Israel he shall not multiply horses for himself nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses for the Lord has said to you you should not return that way again and yet here is Solomon who right after he has been prayed for the gift of wisdom and been given the gift of wisdom is not good.

If, you know, way back when you were reading in Deuteronomy chapter 17, it actually said, and you read this, it said that when you come into the land, which the Lord your God gives you and you possess it, you're going to say, I want a king to rule over us. And he says that a king should not have many horses. A king should not have many wives and a king should not multiply silver and gold.

The Fifth Book of Moses, commonly called Deuteronomy. Chapter 1. Events at Horeb recalled.

These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness in the Erebah over against Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Izahab. It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Sinai to Kadesh-barnea.

And in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the sons of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them.

So the first chapters of Deuteronomy are going to be kind of fun for us because it's going to be Moses recounting the entire story of numbers. So it's kind of like this. Numbers is stretched out over 36 chapters. We're going to get a summary of numbers in the first few chapters of the Book of Deuteronomy.

And then he's going to say, okay, here's a reminder of the law. That second law, Deuteronomy, because Moses is going to tell the people, okay, your parents, they were not faithful. He also is going to say this, you are not going to be faithful either, but this is the Lord's law and I need to give it to you so that you can know when you're not faithful and turn back to the Lord.

And so please, my invitation is as we continue to journey through Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, these are the critical books, critical, critical books that I'm going to invite you, even if I don't make the connection on a daily basis in this kind of guide portion of our reading the Bible, if you can strive to make that connection for yourself between what the people of Israel were commanded to do back then and what you and I as Catholic Christians are commanded to do right now.

as we continue to read Exodus and getting to Numbers and Deuteronomy, we're going to find in all of these books a gap between us and them.

Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, every time it gets weird, every time it seems so strange and so foreign, realize, no, no, no, no. This is not strange.

So Deuteronomical, like remember Deuteronomy? So Deutero meaning second and nomos meaning word, right? Or law.

We are leaving Deuteronomy chapter 34.

And so please, my invitation is as we continue to journey through Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, these are the critical books, critical, critical books that I'm going to invite you, even if I don't make the connection on a daily basis in this kind of guide portion of our reading the Bible, if you can strive to make that connection for yourself between what the people of Israel were commanded to do back then and what you and I as Catholic Christians are commanded to do right now, it is the preparation of God's people to worship him as he has asked to be worshipped.

Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. These are not ancient, not merely ancient books.

Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

He says basically that you have to live your life as though two things. One, there's only one God.

Number two, you've got to teach your children.

And in some ways, I think about it like as a retreat too, but maybe not. Maybe boot camp is a way better phrase, a better way to understand this.

It's a second set of laws that are given due to the hardness of Israel's heart at this particular time. But it has, it's chock filled with wonderful, wonderful guidance and wisdom for us and we can talk about that, particularly in the area of how do you live your life when you're going into a country where it is diametrically opposed to the message of God?

Then we have we have Moses last letter, his last speech, which is Deuteronomy, the second law. And this is an amazing book.

And it's been it's structured in such a way where the first part of it looks back as to where they came from. And it's kind of like, well, it looks back. It looks back at where they were. And the last part looks forward to where they're going. In the middle is where we're at right now.

And that is Deuteronomy 6, 4, and I'll give it to you in Hebrew, and it is Shema Israel Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord and you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, and with all of your might.

And so Moses said, So when we talk about you must teach your children, it's in the broader context of your home. And God says that you should even put the, write these words of mine on the doorposts of your house.

One of the reasons one of the things we're going to see as they journey through the wilderness in the book of Numbers and Deuteronomy what we're going to see is here's God training his people to trust him that they're not in control just like you and I are not in control but God allows us he calls us and he calls us to walk in faith.

If people understand the first five books which are by far the most important in all of the Bible

the founders of the country cited Deuteronomy more than any other religious or secular work in in in the in their writings and in their speeches that's how much this book influenced the creation of the freest country ever made

do not show partiality in judgment

you cannot favor the poor man who comes into your court justice is justice it is like a law against social justice there was only justice it's basically it's a law against equity

do not be afraid of anyone only fear God fear of God is the antidote to fear of man

If you've got a Bible, quickly turn to the book of Deuteronomy.

Deuteronomy chapter 20 is powerful because if you know anything about the book of Deuteronomy, it is the book of instruction that God is giving his law.

Every scripture that Jesus quotes is from the book of Deuteronomy.

He is teaching them to win before they begin, before he puts weapons in their hands, wanting them to deal with the worry in their heart.
