And so midway through my sophomore year, I withdrew from Brown. I shipped off to Lynchburg, Virginia. And I entered Liberty University as a student and an undercover writer. I was going to write a book about my time there.

Except for one thing, I still hadn't told my friends there that there was this book coming out and that they were going to be in it.

And they forgave me, I mean, because, you know, like forgiveness is Christian crack or whatever. So they weren't mad. They were a little confused and they felt that they had actually not done their job by not converting me.

And so years after the book came out, just a little while ago, I gave her a call and we talked and caught up again and talked about the things in our lives that had been going on.

For the Moth's 25th anniversary, five of our longtime story directors spent 18 months putting all our knowledge about storytelling into a book. It's called How to Tell a Story, the Essential Guide to Memorable Storytelling from the Moth.

Elizabeth Gilbert is the best-selling author of nine books of fiction and nonfiction including Eat, Pray, Love and City of Girls.
