I had not really thought of writing a book, but I got a phone call from David Simon, the creator of The Wire, a former Baltimore Sun reporter, someone I've become friendly with over the years.
And he said that he actually wanted to make a show about it and that I should write a book that they could base that show off of.
His book, We Own This City, a true story of crime, cops and corruption was made into an HBO Max limited series.

The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy
The hosts highlighted the Pulitzer Prize‑winning title as a thorough account of the Attica uprising and its long‑term cover‑up, linking it to broader issues of mass incarceration. Lindsey Graham repeatedly recommended the book for listeners who wanted a deeper understanding of the events. The discussion emphasized its importance for learning about the prison siege and its aftermath.
It is a Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the history of the Attica Prison uprising, focusing on the aftermath and the decades-long cover-up by New York's government. The author discussed the violent retaking of the prison and the state's efforts to suppress the truth.
My guest today is Heather Ann Thompson, a professor at the University of Michigan and author of Blood in the Water, the Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the history of Attica.
In our series, we looked at the four-day standoff at Attica, but also the chaotic siege that ended the standoff.
So I wondered if we could focus on that day, those hours. And I was wondering if you could describe as best you can in detail what happened when the New York State troopers stormed the prison.
But I am kind of embarrassed and kind of appalled at how little I knew about it and how I had no idea what I was getting myself into, no idea what I, really how it would change my life.
I mean, I've never in my life written about something for which the trauma was so still personally lived by so many people, but also that the implications of it for the nation in terms of the fallout on mass incarceration, it was a journey that I had never even begun to appreciate when I started it.
This book recounts the Attica prison uprising and its aftermath, including the lies told by the New York state government and the causes of mass incarceration in the United States. It was recommended to listeners for further learning about the Attica prison uprising.

The book provides a comprehensive and definitive account of the judges' kickback scheme. It was written after the author was assigned to cover the hearing for a special committee created to look into the scandal.
My guest today is Bill Akenbarger, a journalist and author of the book Kids for Cash, which offers a definitive account of the judges' kickback scheme.
I was once told by a great newspaper editor that the most important attribute a journalist can have is a sense of outrage. And in my years as a reporter, I had experienced a lot of outrage, particularly covering state government. But nothing ever outraged me like this because these were kids whose lives were destroyed. And it was terribly, terribly sad.
And I realized that this was a very, very important story. In fact, it would occupy me for the next two and a half years.
I interviewed more than 200 people, including 43 of the judges, child victims and their parents, juvenile justice experts, prosecutors, defense lawyers, state officials, federal agents, victims advocates, and local attorneys, judges, although not the two judges, not the two bad judges.
That was my conversation with Bill Eckenbarger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the author of Kids for Cash.

As people finally hear this and finally start to understand what's happening. What we've seen just the last several years is an incredible outcry from the public, from consumers. Expressing concern about why are we being exposed to these? How do we get more information about where they're used?
And the more people that find out about it, the more comprehensive we're seeing these efforts going.
And what we really tried to show in the book, in exposure, you know, was the different people that were impacted, workers at the plant, people in the community there, that those people telling their stories, it did generate huge change.
