She's also author of the books They Left Great Marks on Me, African American Testimonies of Racial Violence from Emancipation to World War I

and the forthcoming I Saw Death Coming, a History of Terror and Survival in the War Against Reconstruction.

As early as 1866, Richmond newspaper editor Edward Pollard published a book justifying the Confederate war effort entitled The Lost Cause, A New Southern History of the War of the Confederates.

The book's title struck a chord, and the myth of The Lost Cause took hold.

Here with me to discuss the Black Coats, the Fugitive Slave Act, and the run-up to the Civil War is Dr. Kate Maser. She's a professor of history at Northwestern University and author of the book Until Justice Be Done, America's First Civil Rights Movement, From the Revolution to Reconstruction.

So, when you first started working on your book Until Justice Be Done, I'm curious why you went back to this period leading up to the Civil War, having written some books about the Civil War and afterwards.

And that's what I tried to do with my book, Until Justice Be Done.

So your book, The Flood Year 1927, it has in its subtitle, a cultural history, but you dive in a little deeper, do you think?

Her book, The Flood Year 1927 is available now from Princeton University Press.

John Barry, a wonderful historian of this flood, wrote Rising Tide in 1997, and he does a great job describing the engineering history that had set up the levees only policy that in his mind was a big part of the catastrophe.

But then As They Lay Dying has at its very center a river and a flood, a family trying to cross that river, people in the novel talking about this being the greatest inundation they'd ever seen.

One of his longer pieces, it's almost a novella length, is called Down by the Riverside. It tells the story of a man and his family caught in rising floodwaters. It was award-winning. Eleanor Roosevelt read it at the time and wrote about reading it and how it reduced her to tears.

So I wrote a long, long chapter in my book, The Character of Meriwether Lewis about this. And I don't know that I got it, but I think I got as close as we're likely to get unless we find new evidence.

Clay is the author of 13 books, including The Character of Meriwether Lewis, Explorer in the Wilderness, an editor of A Vast and Open Plain, the writings of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in North Dakota.

I came back to the United States for the summer here in North Dakota and I read a book called Those Tremendous Mountains about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

But I was reading along in the book and I came to this passage around page 230 in which the author said, and then Meriwether Lewis put a gun to his head and killed himself.
