This book was started as a response to questions from the French Legation in Philadelphia for all of the states. Jefferson felt that French intellectuals viewed Americans as yokels and used the book to defend his new country and make a case for Americans as a people. The book was published in 1785 and republished several times. He included a plan to end slavery in the book, but also started to dip into scientific racism.
The work he did on the run would later make up his only published book notes on the state of Virginia
