Dr. Ernest Chiodo, a toxicologist, physician, biomedical engineer, attorney and author, joined the show to discuss fentanyl overdoses and the lethal dose. He explained that a lethal dose of fentanyl, which would kill most adults, is just two milligrams, or the amount that would cover Lincoln's head on a penny.
Toxic Tort: Medical and Legal Elements
A lethal dose of fentanyl, something that would kill most adults, would be two milligrams. Well, what does that mean? If you have five to seven grains of salt, that is two milligrams, which is a very small amount of fentanyl. In fact, if you have a pencil, if you have a sharpened pencil and you have the tip of the pencil, you literally on the tip of the pencil pick up two milligrams. Or if you have a penny and you have Lincoln's head on the penny, two milligrams would cover just a little bit more of the nose on the penny. So it's a very small amount. Obviously, five times that is say 10 milligrams. Still also a very small amount. Because fentanyl is a very powerful, powerful drug.
