The wonderful book by Alan McFarlane, a colleague of mine in Cambridge, called The Origins of English Individualism, that shows that the English people from the 13th, 12th, 13th century onwards were constantly moving around, always moving around. We were not very familial. We weren't very sort of clan-based at all.
