It tells the story of James Riley, captain of the merchant ship Commerce, which shipwrecked off the coast of North Africa in 1815. Riley, along with his entire crew, were stranded in the Saharan desert, seized and enslaved by desert nomads, and forced to endure starvation, beatings and being treated as property far beneath camels and donkeys.
