The International Booker Prize is a prestigious award that goes to the best foreign language novels translated into English. And the book Keros by German author Jenny Erpenbeck was just announced as this year's winner.

In a statement announcing the win, judge chair Eleanor Wachtel praised author Jenny Erpenbeck's ability to meld the personal with the political.

Erpenbeck is a German writer with a background directing opera. The book's translator is a poet and essayist named Michael Hoffman, who's translated dozens of books from German to English.
