A metaphor for a lot of things, depending on how you look at it. It could be for unrequited love, emotional sacrifice, the acceptance of society, coming of age. I mean, I could go on and on. But the truth is, while mermaids might be a great literary tool, there are some stories out there that suggest they're a lot more than just metaphors, including some accounts from wellknown historical figures. It is a work of fiction.
