I mean, you definitely check out Townsend's book that I mentioned, but from what I've been able to gather about both of them, it seems like they just wanted very different things.
They think if it was like sitting out all the time, a stranger could have easily grabbed it. And they think that it's possible the killer took the knife with him in a newspaper because apparently there were two newspapers outside of the house.
