Because the man's an idiot or a liar. Hastings says his cutoff is shorter, takes you right into California instead of up north to Oregon. Hastings hasn't even seen most of that trail.
James Klyman was right. Haysing's had no idea what he was talking about. His friend James Reed was one of the leaders of the infamous Donner Party. He ignored Klyman's advice to stick to the main California trail. Instead, following Haysing's guidebook, the party set out to shave off time by crossing the brutal desert to the west of the Great Salt Lake.
