I wanted to take a major contemporary issue, which is our mental health and addiction crisis, and highlight 12 people who, in telling their stories, really help us have a greater understanding and appreciation for what it is like to live with these illnesses.
It was my uncle, President Kennedy, who wrote the original "Profiles in Courage" where he celebrated eight United States senators for their political courage.
I think that made a big difference in them being so open and transparent, because to a person they wanted to help others not have to go through what they had to experience dealing with an illness that is, frankly, discriminated against, marginalized, and people suffer as a result of it, including denial of insurance care, which is what I've been fighting on a policy level to combat.
