Call Her Daddy
The book, co-authored by Carol Gilligan and Naomi Snider, was highly featured on the podcast, with Snider appearing to discuss its core arguments about the endurance of the system. The discussion centered on the psychological functions of patriarchy, explaining that it persists because it offers men "psychological armor" when they disavow their vulnerability and emotional needs. The conversation explored how this dynamic affects relationships and addressed the common denial used by women who claim patriarchy does not impact their contentment.
Episode: How Does Patriarchy Affect Me?
It was co-authored by Naomi Snider and Carol Gilligan, and explored the psychological functions of patriarchy and how it persists in daily life, particularly in intimate relationships.
And it was originally published five years ago.
Our biggest fear was that people would say, what the hell are you talking about? I wasn't persistent anymore.
And basically what we discovered was that in part patriarchy persists because it serves a psychological function.
To be a patriarchal man, meaning a man that sort of disavows, disconnects from his vulnerability, his need for relationships, his emotional life, not only does that give him incredible access to material gain, it offers him a psychological armor in the world.
And so it's kind of like that woman who then says, oh, patriarchy, it might affect you, not me. I'm totally content.
