I wrote this book for so many reasons.
Your listeners can probably tell by my accent that I'm not from the United States, but I have become in my heart more American than Kenny Powers.
They were like clues of this land that I felt I was, America, even though I'd never set foot there.

It was described as an Englishman's love letter to America, discussing American culture, movies, music and narratives, specifically the author's experiences as an immigrant.
I wrote this book for so many reasons. Your listeners can probably tell by my accent that I'm not from the United States, but I have become in my heart more American than Kenny Powers.
It's the words of Langston Hughes, let America be America again, the land that never has been yet and yet must be.
This is why I wanted to write this book about a love, a nuanced love of America.
I came out and tweeted a photo of myself with a naturalization certificate and it was the most joyous day of my life and immediately there was, you know, I must say the majority of people joyous, just welcoming, just elated.
And I think the book is a beautiful antidote to some of that trauma and in particular, the scene where you become a citizen and all the people around you and applauding for each other and the diversity in the room.
